Haircuts 2012: What was cool in 2010?
From ‘60s- inspired bobs to over-the-top texture, here are the styles that topped the charts in 2010
Shear Dynamite
Make those thick locks amazing with short undercuts and a layered surface that look especially brazen in ravishing red. Enhance the texture with a pliable styler and a vent brush, taking everything forward.
Swept Away
Blow-dry your layered cut forward by directing air flow from the back, and you’ve got a rough-and-tumble style that looks naturally windswept. Light blonde makes the mane even bolder.
Pop Tart
This pop-culture-inspired look is snipped for a mop-top effect, while cartoonish color comes from bleached blonde with goldenrod ends and just a hint of brunette further up. Shy ladies need not apply! This is a for sure to last Haircuts 2012 haircut!
Get a Lift
Sexy, bi-level styles look best with curl and lift on top and a tapered nape. Shortened sides frame the face and simplify styling. Just concentrate on blow-drying or iron-curling the top, using a little pomade to piece out the bangs.
Fringe Benefit
Here, an updated bob is nearly bi-level, as layers progress from narrow to fuller from ear up. The thick, full fringe anchors the style, while the sides lighten it up. Blow-dry hair with mousse and a medium round brush.
Step Lively
Long layers enliven a bob that gets natural depth courtesy of lowlights. Roller-setting makes styling a snap, while finishing spray lifts locks even more. Ruffle through strands with a bit of pomade for a final energy-boost.
Swing Shift
Straight hair has super texture and movement when long layers are directed toward a single point in front. Apricot and honey hues create natural depth and blended tonalities when painted on baliage style. Use a little mousse to make fullness take off with ease.
Pure & Simple
Sometimes, the simplest style is the one that works for you! For instance, this tapered bob, can be worn forward, tucked back or taken half and half, allowing quick, easy changes. Shorter sections in front are tugged free for a flirty finish.
Flip for it
Full-blown volume and a fabulous flip never go out of style, not even for Haircuts 2012! Asymmetric detailing and volume that shifts from the top to the back make it the look of the moment. It’s a great option for hair that’s medium to thick in texture.
Haircuts: Men Rate The Looks
We asked some style-savvy dudes to dish on what the liked – and didn’t like- about these short styles. Here’s what they had to say.
Kelly Osbourne
Adam: She looks ridiculous. Ozzy should bite her head off.
Joe: NO! NO! NO! NO! Do normal people wear hair like this?
Mike: This is like a haircut from the suture – except that it’s the future that they dream up in the movies that never actually comes close to being anything near reality. Maybe Kelly went back in time to warn us all of terrible hairstylists.
Vincent: I give her points for being different, but different isn’t always better. I don’t think ’80s glam is coming back.
Wendy Kremer
Adam: Parts of it look like she scould take an eye out, but if she keeps her distance, it’s a good look for her.
Joe: I like short hair, but not that short. It doesn’t look very feminine to me.
Mike: Simple. Cool. Effective.
Vincent: It’s fun and youthful. I like that casual part, too.
Sunny Mabrey
Simple and nice. Very wholesome-looking.
Joe: I like her cut a lot. Despite the fact that it probably took her four hours to do, I like that it looks like she didn’t spend much time on it. I don’t like overdone hair (see Kelly Osboune). It’s simple, and it works.
Kristen Storms
Adam: I really don’t like this at all. Don’t worry, Kristen – we’re gonna get the guy who did this to you!
Joe: I actually like this hair. Her haircut does a great job of complementing her cute looks instead of distracting from them.
Mike: Kristen Storms, huh? I hope she stormed out of her hairstylist’s place and bought a wig.
It’s kind of boring. I like the color, but I’m not feeling the cut.
Tracie Thoms
Adam: Suddenly I have an uncontrollable urge to mop the floor.
Joe: I like her hair. It’s a really cool texture.
Mike: I think I saw Tracie’s hair on an infomercial. It was made with special space-age fibers designed for ultra-absorbency.
Vincent: She’s pretty, but this hair isn’t a good look on her. It looks like a helmet, not real hair.
Alicia Witt
Adam: It’s not a particularly bad hairstyle. It’s just kinda boring. Luckily, if she ever decides to get a makeover she can use this as her ‘before’ picture. Problem solved.
Joe: I really like redheads, but I do not like this cut. I think I had the same part in high school…when I still had hair.
Mike: Looking at the cut, I want to admire it for simplicity, but I can’t. It just looks like she spent no time on it at all.
Vincent: I like this cut because it’s choppy. That makes it look edgy and stylish.
Haircut: Is longer better?
Style Court is in session! See how two tress experts size up stars who wear long extensions one day, then go short the next, and vice versa!
With so many of hollywood’s hottest regularly switching between way-long extensions and chic shorts, we asked two top stylists to tell us which looks the prefer.
Our experts: Roland Barner of Roland’s at Salon Merle Noram in Rock hills, SC, and Lisa Holt of Urban Roots Hair Studio in San Francisco, CA
Ashlee Simpson
Holt says Ashlee “can pull off long and short very well,” but the extra-long extensions may be too much. Barnes also prefers the cute crop: “Short hair softens her face, and is a more modern style.”
Izabella Miko
Barnes and Holt agree long hair balances Izabella’s round face, especially when worn straight. Say Holt: “Because of her strong jawline, long hair works best. It really softens her jaw and elongates her face.”
Kelly Clarkson
Barnes isn’t a fan of the long look: “Long hair on her is really bad. It drags her down.” Holt is a little more forgiving: “Both the long and short cuts work,” but the super-sleek crop is better at flattering Kelly’s features.
Tricia Helfer
“The short style works well since it really draws the eye to her elegant jawline,” says Holt. Barnes thinks anything would work on Tricia: “You could shave her head and she’d look good!” But, he says, “short is more updated.”
Sienna Miller
Our experts are undecided about the star, who recently had extensions attached. The short cut shows off sienna’s fine features, says Barnes, who adds that “it’s a better style for her.” But Holt likes the length: “Sienna wears long hair better than short.”
Advice
Many times, you will hear various opinions from many people. Our advice: ultimately it’s what you feel comfortable in! Your are the one wearing your hair, however, remember if you have the majority of people telling you otherwise, just ask yourself…why am I wearing this cut?
